I am extremely happy for Warren Sapp. He has worked hard and deserves to be treated with respect. The writing was on the wall for him to leave as soon as the Bucs signed Ellis Wyms to a six year contract. Once again, Gruden and Allen proved that when their lips are moving, they're lying. Gruden kept saying how Warren was a Buc and should end his career as a Buc. He was lying. Gruden wants total control and glory for himself and as puppet master for Allen; he is getting what he wants. The Raiders were very cool about their run after Warren. I can only wonder it they are going to make the same kind of run at John Lynch at the 11th hour. That would give the Raiders two of the best players in football in exchange for their coach and GM. I think the Raiders would be getting the better end of the deal. - Joan Witt, Brandon.
In my opinion, Gruden is destroying the Bucs, from the front office (with Rich McKay) right on down to the players. Rest of the players better watch their backs. A real sorry day for the Bucs. I know I won't watch every game like I did before. No real reason too. - Yvette Sussman, Clearwater.
Sapp was good ... three years ago. The payday he demanded was not equal to his on-field performance. As I recall, he sat out a game last year and the defense was better. A team can not be financially responsible for past skills. Goodbye Mr. Sapp. We wish you well and we will see you in the fall. - Dan and Greg Bean, Richmond, Va.
Having fun over there with the Raiders of the East? Now you know why when Gruden left, Raider fans weren't too upset about it. It was his way or the doghouse. I am glad the Raiders picked up Sapp and it is a great addition. Say what you will about him being out of his ''prime,'' but Al Davis knows how to regenerate the spark and Sapp will be a force to reckoned with come time for the Bucs-Raiders meeting later on in the season. - Daniel Canedo, Travis AFB, Calif.
They can have my tickets and my parking space. I can't believe the tremendous SUPER-SIZE ego of Jon Gruden. This will do him in for sure. I wish someone would trade him. - Brenda LaPointe, Largo.
It's disgraceful that Gruden and Allen asked Brooks to restructure his contract, only to destroy the defense so they can sign a bunch of washed up second-tier players for the offense. R.I.P., defense. Meanwhile, I've got to get started on my ''Throw Gruden In the Bay'' signs for this season when we go 3-13. - Chris Brady, Tampa.
I just think it's sad that a great player like Sapp is just let go. Did the Bucs even make a counter-offer to try and keep him? No. He may have stayed with the team for less than he took to go to the Raiders. You hope that Allen and Gruden know what the hell they're doing. Thank you, Warren, for all the games. You will always be a Buc to me. - Nick Polygalaktos, Deltona.
It is a sad day. However, everyone needs to sober up and
realize that this franchise can't afford a $36.6 million defensive tackle under their salary cap. This is what happens
when you continue to restructure huge contracts. Payday
comes. This isn't about Bruce Allen or Jon Gruden's ego.
Nobody wants to get rid of a Pro Bowler. Smart teams, like
the Patriots, figure out how to win with few ''superstars.''
Bruce Allen and Jon Gruden are doing the best that can be
done given the situation that Rich McKay left them in! Good
luck QBKilla. We are really going to miss you. - William Fleece, Clearwater.
Dear Coach Gruden and GM Allen: What the heck are you guys thingking? You have just thrown away two of the best players the Bucs have ever had. When KJ was let loose, that was no big deal. But now Sapp and Lynch? Get your heads out of the sand. To Sapp and Lynch, good luck, and you will be missed! - Bill Buzzell, Belleair Bluffs.
Goodbye Warren. Wish you the best! Hope those Oakland fans can deal with your mouth. - Randy Smith, Sebring.
Good for Sapp; good for the Bucs; good for Oakland. Everyone wins. But I wonder, is Alstott on the way out? -- Bernard Thomas, Trinity
Bye Warren. It's been one heck of a ride. Thank You! -- Doyle Haynes, Tampa
We finally got rid of our two loud mouth locker room distractions. -- Mark Montis, Tampa
Can we send Jon and Bruce back and keep our Warren? They need to get their heads outta you know where. This is another HUGE loss for the Bucs and the fans. I hope Warren gets another Superbowl ring this year at Oakland. I will sport my #99 Raider jersey with great pride. What a lucky team they are. Bucs tickets are getting really easy to get. Mine are for sale! DIRT CHEAP! I love ya Warren...Best wishes and you will be greatly missed by your fans. -- Lisa Nugent, St. Petersburg
Well it is finally happening! Jon Gruden is single handedly dismantling one the greatest defenses ever. After a 7-9 season, Gruden's head has gotten so big he can't stand to see the defense be the only group that can perform so he has now run off Lynch and Sapp. What next? Perhaps Brooks or Barber? Those are two more all-star players, so rest assured Gruden won't keep them long. I am no bandwagon fan. The first game I went to, Gary Huff led the Bucs past the St Louis Cardinals for their first home victory (Dec 18, 1977) yet my job moved me across the country. Today I am happy to not be in Tampa as I could not stand to watch my beloved Bucs turned back into perennial losers by an egomaniac. Someone please fire Jon Gruden before all our stars leave the team. -- Larry Meadows, Bothell, WA
Oh boy, I can't wait for Chucky Face and Frankenstein Allen to give us the canned remarks on how they hoped to re-sign Sapp, how he's a great player, how they love him and wish him well, etc. Give me a break. Yes, this was expected, but it doesn't dull the frustration. Love him or hate him, he was part of the driving soul behind the Bucs, and now the latest victim of the Chucky Purge. I'll bet Gruden would get rid of Lee Roy Selmon if he could; his ego is THAT large. -- Joey Machado, Tampa
Personalities aside, I think Warren Sapp is the best defensive tackle in the league. I cannot understand the reason for letting him go. I'm not even a real Bucs fan. -- Donald Stovall, Tampa
Looks like the ghost of Culverhouse is haunting One Buc Place. Dump the talent and saleries! We'll miss you Warren and John, just like we missed Doug and Steve. OK Gruden and Allen, it's your team now, let's see if you can deliver. -- Denis Miller, Herndon, VA
It's a sad, sad day for the Bucs. Hhopefully we can maintain the same level of intensity and intimidation. But on the other hand with the salary cap and all, teams cannot afford to keep all of the stars. A lot of the great ones never finish their careers with the teams that drafted them. I guess the team will have to develop the younger guys and hope that they can fill the very large holes left by John Lynch and Warren Sapp. -- Bruce Johnson, Chandler, AZ
It's the best for the Bucs. Warren's sack average has dropped considerably after 2000. His age also posed a factor. Booger McFarland is capable of succeeding Warren on the front line. Plus what are you going to do with the salary cap issue. I don't see where Warren's loss will hurt the Bucs. -- John Fitzsimmons, Toms River, NJ
I'm a Tampa native and Bucs fan since birth (79). I say "good riddance". Sapp's mouth is too big for the Bucs. He got his ring and ran as soon as times got tough. I wish him the best on the NFL's senior citizen team. -- Carlo Serrano, Fort Campbell, KY
Good for Warren. We in Tampa got his best years and a Super Bowl. I am happy to see him get another big pay day to end his career. It was obvious he wasn't going to get it from Gruden or the Bucs organization. Loyalty has gone the way of Tony Dungy, Rich McKay, John Lynch and many more to come. Now we will see if winning is the result. -- David Rounds, Tampa
The only thing I'm upset about the Sapp deal is that I couldn't be there to pack his bags and drive him personally to the airport. If his productivity had been half as good as his mouth, he would have actually deserved to be in the pro bowl the last three years! -- Jason Smouse, Tampa
Sapp was a great player for our beloved Bucs, and true fans will wish him well in Oakland. However, the past couple years he will be more remembered as a guy who has passed his prime and could only bring attention to himself by acting like a school boy. It is fitting that Sapp leaves only two shy of the franchise career sack record. May that record be broken by someone with a little more class. Go Simeon!!! Go Bucs!!! Good bye Sapp!!! -- Charles Wills, Zephyrhills
This is a sad day for myself and most Buc fans. Not only did we have to hear a tearful Lynch say, "money was not the issue, I justed wanted to get it done so I could retire a buc". Now now I have to go through the same with Sapp (money was not the issue). You never see athletes today willing to make a sacfice to remain with a team. The only thing I have to say to you Gruden and Allen, you didn't get it done in Oakland and you're not going to it done this way either. Do me a favor Allen...resign! I miss Rich already. Good luck Sapp! -- Michael Frazier, West Palm Beach
Warren could be a pain, among other things, but the bottom line is that he was a great Buc. He was the heart of the team. Will we even know the team now? The heart and soul are gone. We will miss John and Warren more than we can realize now. Good luck to them both. If we lose Mike, that's the end of the Bucs for me. -- Barbara McGovern, Tarpon Springs
Bye! Bye! Our gain...the Raiders loss in my opinion. -- Greg Risley, Tampa
Sapp had a lot of talent, but lately he went for showman instead of player. I truly believe had he quit showboating and played football he still would be a Buc. So long Warren, have a great time in oakland. -- Mark Darling, Sebring
I say congratulations to the QB Killa. The fans in Tampa are great, but there are no fans like the ones in the Black Hole. Welcome to Oakland Warren. I look forward to wearing my Black & Silver 99 Jersey. -- Ben Brindle, Zephyrhills
Good ridence to Mr. Sapp, hope he enjoys oakland. It was quite apparent he did not like Tampa Bay anymore just by his attitude and play. -- Bill Yamnitz, Mulberry
